What are the cards helping you see in yourself?

Most of us start an oracle or tarot reading with a question like, ‘What should I do? Where am I headed? Why is this happening? What do I need to understand? Am I making the right choice?’ We shuffle and lay out the cards, then immediately seek an answer. We glance at the card’s title, recall its symbolism, check the guidebook for its meaning, and try to interpret what it’s telling us. There’s nothing wrong with this approach. For centuries, oracle and tarot have been used to explore questions, possibilities, and different viewpoints.

The Reimagined Oracle introduces a new focus: YOU. Instead of just asking, “What does this card mean?”, it encourages you to reflect on, “What is this card awakening within me, and what perspective am I bringing to this question?” While the card provides insights, your interpretation adds further understanding. The Reimagined Oracle Foundational Spread combines these aspects, aligning your heart and mind.

The Card Is Only Part of the Reading

Having spent many years working with Oracle and Tarot cards both personally and professionally, I began noticing something about my readings. I could understand a card’s meaning perfectly, yet sometimes it didn’t resonate with me personally. I could interpret the symbolism and message intellectually, but if I couldn’t connect it to my real experiences, it became just more information in my mind, often forgotten later.

Conversely, when I really wished for a specific outcome, I would keep drawing cards until I got the answer I wanted. Hands up if this is you too! At that point, I wasn’t uncovering anything new, just seeking reassurance.

This curiosity made me ask: what if I concentrated on my personal reactions to the cards before interpreting them? What patterns or filters am I applying? This question became central to The Reimagined Oracle, highlighting that a card’s meaning depends on what it evokes within you.

Bringing Feeling and Understanding Together

We often start a reading with a straightforward question about our desires or needs. However, this question may not fully capture how we are truly feeling. There might be frustration, excitement, fear, relief, resistance, hope, anger, curiosity, or other emotions we haven’t recognised yet.

The Reimagined Oracle doesn’t ask you to analyse these feelings or judge them as right or wrong. Instead, it acknowledges them as part of the reading. Your emotions add personal depth, while the card’s imagery, symbolism, and meaning provide information and new perspectives. Together, these elements let feeling, intuition, knowledge, and reflection coalesce into a meaningful dialogue. This approach is the Foundational Spread’s core intent.

The Reimagined Oracle Foundational Spread

You will need your favourite Oracle or Tarot deck. This spread uses six cards.

The first is the Reveal Card. The remaining five form the reading itself.

The process is: CENTRE → QUESTION → SHUFFLE → LAY OUT → REVEAL → REFRAME → READ → INTEGRATE

Step-by-Step Reading Process

1. Become Centred

Begin by taking a few moments to become present.

You may like to use a short meditation, focus on your breathing or simply sit quietly until you feel ready to begin.

This is simply a transition from whatever you were doing before into the space of the reading.

2. Ask Your Question

Bring your question to mind and say it aloud or write it down.

Ask what you genuinely want to explore. You don’t need to find the perfect question.

For example: Where am I getting in my own way?

This is your starting question. It may change once the reading begins.

3. Shuffle the Cards

Shuffle the deck while holding your question in mind.

Use whatever shuffling method feels natural to you. When you feel ready, stop.

4. Lay Out Six Cards Face Down

Lay six cards face down. You can take the top six cards or fan out the deck and intuitively choose six cards.

The first card is your Reveal Card.

The remaining five cards form the Foundational Spread:

  1. What?
  2. Why?
  3. What Else?
  4. What Now?
  5. Higher Perspective

Leave these five cards face down for now.

5. Turn Over the Reveal Card

Turn over the Reveal Card.

Before interpreting the card, reading the guidebook or trying to work out what it means, notice your immediate response.

Ask: What is my first response to this card?

You may notice an emotion, sensation, attraction, resistance, curiosity or something you can’t immediately name.

You may even notice nothing. There is no right response. Simply notice what arises first.

If it helps, you can gently place your hand over the centre of your chest as a reminder to notice what you are experiencing rather than immediately trying to interpret it.

6. Reframe Your Question

Bring your first response into your original question.

For example: Original question: Where am I getting in my own way?

First response: Frustration.

Your reframed question might become:

Where am I getting in my own way through my frustration?

Or:

What is my frustration helping me see about where I’m getting in my own way?

Don’t get caught trying to create the perfect wording. You are simply allowing your response to add another layer of information to the question.

7. Card One – WHAT?

Turn over the first card of the five-card spread.

Ask: What is this showing me?

Now you can explore the whole card: imagery, symbols, title, keywords, guidebook meaning, intuitive impressions and anything else you notice.

Read the card in relation to your reframed question.

8. Card Two – WHY?

Turn over the second card.

Ask: Why is this important for me to understand?

Allow this card to deepen the reading and help you recognise why what is emerging matters to you.

9. Card Three – WHAT ELSE?

Turn over the third card.

Ask: What else am I not seeing or considering?

This card introduces another perspective.

Instead of assuming your current view of the situation is the whole picture, stay curious about what else might be available to you.

10. Card Four – WHAT NOW?

Turn over the fourth card.

Ask: How can I bring what I’m discovering into my life?

Consider how your new understanding might influence the way you think, choose, communicate, act or engage with the situation.

The card isn’t giving you an instruction. It is helping you explore how the insight might become relevant to your life.

11. Card Five – HIGHER PERSPECTIVE

Turn over the final card.

Ask: How might my higher self see this differently?

Allow yourself to step back from the immediate situation and consider it from a wider perspective.

What else becomes visible from here?

12. Integrate the Reading

Pause and return to the question you began with and everything that has emerged through the reading.

Ask yourself: What do I understand about myself now that I couldn’t see when I began?

Notice what makes sense to you, what resonates and what you want to carry with you into your life. You don’t have to resolve everything.

The purpose is to bring together your question, your response, the wisdom of the cards and your own understanding.
